Formatting messages with Prose

The messages sent to conversations in Prose can be formatted with Markdown. Markdown makes it very easy to make some text bold, insert links, source code, etc.

Formatting Options

The following formatting options are available to you when composing a message:

Bold: **bold text**
Italic: _italic text_
Strikethrough: ~~strikethrough text~~
URL: [Link title](https://domain.tld)
Bullet list: * Item 1
Number list: 1. Item 1

You can also insert source code. Code coloring will be applied if the language is recognized (eg. JavaScript).

Change your app from Light Mode to Dark Mode

The Prose application is available in both Light Mode and Dark Mode. By default, Prose will try to auto-detect the best theme for your system, however, you can easily force a mode (Light orDark).

You can easily change from Light mode, to Dark mode, or use the auto-detected theme mode as such:

Open your Account settings (in the bottom left menu bar).
In General, change the Theme option to your needs.

Recording audio messages on Prose

Accepted Answer

When text is not enough to express your ideas, you may want to try recording an audio message instead. Prose lets you share audio messages to your team mates.

Record an Audio

To record an audio message, click on the Record Audio button next to the message composing field in a conversation:

Then, say what you have to say! Once ready, press on the send button:

Once sent, your team mate will receive your audio message, and both of you can play it to listen to it:

|| Audio messages sent on Prose do not have any expiration date, unlike apps such as Apple iMessage. They are kept the same way as text messages.

Starting new conversations on Prose (DMs and Channels)

Conversations on Prose can either be Direct Messages (per-contact), or between multiple people (in public channels or private channels). There is no such things as "conversations" in Prose wording, rather "rooms".

Starting a Direct Message

A Direct Message room goes for a one-to-one conversation between you and a team member.

Your active DMs appear in the left sidebar as an active conversation. You can open it, and close it. Closing a conversation will not remove your history messages, it'll only remove the conversation from your sidebar.

To open a new DM with a team member, click on "Open a direct message", search for the target contact, and finally open the conversation to send your message:

Creating a Public Channel

A Public Channel is a conversation between many people from your team, that can be joined and left by anyone. It is listed in the public list of channels for all your team members.

To create a new public channel, or join an existing public channel, click on "Add a channel", give it a lowercase name (short and simple is best) and finally create or join it:

Setting up the Prose macOS application

Accepted Answer

Prose is available for macOS as a standalone application. It is very lightweight and does not impact your Mac's battery when you are on the go. We advise using Prose's macOS app instead of the Web browser version.

Downloading Prose

Prose for macOS can be downloaded on the Prose downloads page.

| You need to select your Mac's CPU architecture. The Apple version is built for Macs running on Apple Silicon, while the Intel version is for legacy Macs running on Intel Core CPUs.

Installing Prose

Once you downloaded Prose, mount the DMG file you just downloaded and drag the Prose app icon to your Applications folder.

Then, simply open Prose from your Applications, and log in to your account.

Updating Prose

Prose is kept up-to-date automatically in the background for you.

Whenever an update is available, you will be prompted to update the application. The update is a one click process that only takes a few seconds on a fast Internet connection.

Accessing the Prose Web application

Prose is available as a Web app for Web browsers. It is very convenient to connect to your Prose account on the go when you do not have a Prose app installed.

To login to your Prose account from the Prose Web app:

Open the domain name of your Prose Pod server (ask your administrator if you do not know the domain).
Login to your Prose account.

👉 Alternatively, you can also use the Prose Web App from the official Prose website.

|| Since Web browsers are only capable of connecting to services over HTTPS or WebSocket, the connection to your server will be relayed through a WebSocket server. This might make it impossible for you to connect to non-Prose compliant XMPP servers. Use a dedicated Prose app if you need native XMPP connection.
