About Prose pricing model and subscriptions

Prose is an open-source project, the Prose app is free to download, the Prose Pod server is free to self-host. We however have to cover costs for product development, which is why we also have a business model. This article explains how our pricing model works.

Usage Tiers

Our Pricing Page summarizes which subscriptions (free or paid) are available to our users.

We identified 2 main use-cases for a Prose server:

To run a community (exchange ideas around a topic of interest, much like a forum).
To run a business or NGO.

The pricing model is different based on the use-case:

The community version of Prose is limited to a fair use policy, allowing a maximum of 100 users on the self-hosted server.
The business version lifts all limits. It is also possible to let us host your server, so that you do not have to manage it on your own premises. You can also run it on your premises. We'll however charge you a per-user/per-month price.

Our paid users directly contribute to making Prose better, since it allows us to pay for project development expenses, mostly for the Prose team. We can only continue building new Prose features thanks to our business version subscriptions, and can't be more thankful to our paid users.

We are a non-profit, dedicated to re-investing all paid subscription proceeds in the Prose product, or other projects relevant to making Prose better (eg. funding the development of new XMPP standards relevant for Prose).
